Know Your Worth
A good sense of self-worth is the most important aspect of finding the perfect freelance job. Writing is a skill. It takes years to hone, and not everyone can write well. So, if you can, and you know you can, then don’t work for free!
Beginning freelancers may not be able to set a fixed rate for every job. But, consider this- the industry standard for freelance writers is between $0.03 and $0.10 per word. That means if you’re writing a 500-word article you should be making between $15 and $50. Say it takes you an hour to write and edit 500 words. Can you find a part-time job that pays $15 an hour? Probably. Hell, a lot of grocery stores pay that now.
The point is, skip those jobs that are offering five dollars for a thousand words. Employers who offer that little for a job don’t take you or your work seriously. Why take those jobs when you can make more money at your local grocery store?
Pitch to your Niche
This might be obvious but write about subjects that interest you. Come up with pitches for articles about your hobbies or passions. Think about the blogs and websites that you visit on a weekly or even daily basis. Pitch your articles to those sites. The advantage of this is two-fold. You get to write about something you enjoy, and your enthusiasm and expertise will improve the quality of your writing.
Don’t Rely on Content Mills
Upwork, Fiverr, Guru, and Freelancer. These are the go-to sites for a lot of freelance writers who are looking to score that first gig. But, it can be very hard to find a good-paying job on these sites.
Freelancers on these content mills will undercut your prices to score work. This means that you may have to charge bargain basement fees to score new clients.
Another thing to consider is what percentage these content mills take from your earnings. People do make money on content mills, but it’s a grind.

Indeed’s popularity is a double-edged sword, though. While there are plenty of jobs to choose from, the competition is stiff. So, make sure you stand out in the crowd of applicants.
Linkedin Jobs
Like Indeed, the strength of Linkedin’s job board is how many employers use it. Linkedin is also a great way to connect with employers. You can find salary information and the number of people applying for a single job.
One thing to consider when applying through Linkedin- make sure that you polish up your profile, and any uploaded files like your resume or CV. And, make sure your photo looks good and professional.
We Work Remotely
We Work Remotely bills themselves as the “largest remote work community in the world.” If you couldn’t tell from the name, this is a job board that specializes in remote job opportunities. They currently have over 12,000 remote jobs listed on their site.
Aside from a very helpful blog, and a ton of other resources for job-seekers, they have a top 100 list. This is a list of the top 100 companies that have the most experience hiring workers remotely. We Work Remotely is also a great resource if you’re looking to hire the top talent from anywhere in the country.
FlexJobs
This job board specializes in providing flexible work options. Like the board listed above, it’s a great resource if you’re only looking for remote work. FlexJobs curates its list of potential jobs, and some jobs are behind a paywall.
The benefit is that FlexJobs vets all the jobs on its site. So, you know that it’s quality and professional work. They also offer expert resources on their site and motivational support. Who doesn’t need that?
Journalism Jobs
Has it always been your dream to be a Peabody Award-Winning Investigative Journalist? Well, you’ll need to find a job first. Journalism Jobs provides a list of jobs from news outlets, television stations, and magazines. You can search for jobs in your zip code and it’s free!
Jobs In Social Media
Do you have experience writing winning copy for Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram? You have no idea how many companies need your talent. Ok, maybe you do.
This job board has thousands of jobs posted and you can search for social media in your local area. Or, you can branch out, and write copy remotely.
Craigslist
Craigslist has been around since, seemingly, the birth of the internet. It’s survived controversy, and decades of competition for one reason- it works. It doesn’t hurt that it’s free and it’s pretty simple to use.
Type in your zip code and search for work in their job postings. Or take a look at the ‘Gigs’ section. They even have a sub-category for writing gigs.
Freelance Writing
The problem with a lot of job boards is that you have to spend so much time sifting through all the jobs that you don’t want. Freelance Writing only lists writing jobs!
They also have a great blog, awesome free resources, and their site is clean and easy to use. One problem is that you can only filter by major cities and your city probably isn’t one of those. For instance, the only option in Texas seems to be Austin. They do allow you to filter for remote jobs, though.

Media Bistro has been a trusted name in the online writing community for several years. They provide a great job board and several online courses to help grow your freelancing writing career.
